25 Years Later: Raven at the Rockit Room, 8/22/08

[this is good]

Hi Crow.

Great write up of the Raven show! I am an unabashed Raven fan. They are far and away my favorite group, so I appreciate you taking the time to describe the experience. And the photos are great. The “now and then” of you and John is classic.

For what it’s worth, I’m one of the “latter day” Raven fans. I first discovered them in the Columbia tape club in 1986. I picked up The Pack is Back as one of my 13 cassettes for a penny. I was kind of a new metal fan at the time. I had just discovered Def Leppard and Dokken and the like. But Raven was altogether a different band, at least in my eyes. The drummer was named Wacko, John screamed like a maniac, the bass player was the singer and his brother was the guitarist, they were busting through lockers in spandex and jockstraps, and some of their songs had horn sections! It was just nuts. The album grew on me, enough so I picked up Stay Hard, the MAD EP and Life’s a Bitch. A couple of years later, by chance, I found Nothing Exceeds Like Excess. And that was it for about a decade. As far as I knew, that was the Raven catalog. I had no idea what happened to them, but I treasured those albums. To this day, Life’s a Bitch is still one of my favorite recordings.

It would be years later until I found out that (1) Raven had albums prior to Stay Hard, (2) that The Pack is Back was panned by critics and fans, and (3) Raven was still alive and kicking. Thanks to the Internet, I’m all caught up now. I picked up all the old and new stuff and it’s all good. And I still like The Pack is Back. Even though the guys had very little creative control over the album and its commercial sound is not them at all, I still enjoy it. It has the touch of craziness to it that seems to be the hallmark of Raven.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know a fellow Raven fan enjoyed your post. I’m glad you got to see them live. I’ve seen them twice and can’t wait to see them again! Hopefully they’ll play a few shows in support of their excellent new album, Wall Through Fire. If you’d like to hear some of it, 30 second samples of each song is posted on the Raven message board:
