Circulus “The Lick on the Tip of an Envelope Yet to be Sent” cd
I bought this cd on the strength of their song on one of the
Ptolemaic Terrascope compilation cds, and I have to say it’s a bit of a
letdown. It has that escapist “seventies
by way of mediaeval Europe” vibe, which is a tricky
sound to pull off convincingly. At their
best, they remind me of The Incredible String Band or perhaps Gryphon. At their worst, they sound like bad progressive
rock. The lyrics, while I can relate to
the impetus behind them, sometimes come off as silly (sometimes intentionally,
sometimes not). There are a couple of songs from their second cd up on their myspace page, and I like them a lot better than the songs on this one.
