Feathers
Feathers “Kurt Sings” cdr ep
I picked this up at a Feathers show in January, 2006 when they opened for Espers in San Francisco . It’s packaged in purple construction paper, sewn together to make a cd sleeve. The cover artwork is printed (silkscreened?) in gold and features a fairytale cornucopia of mushrooms, planets, flowers, a turret, a tortoise and a salamander, and an odd looking gnome of some sort.
The music, “recorded here and there in the weird months of 2003,” mirrors the artwork, being fanciful and mysterious. The first song, the self-titled Feathers, barely over a minute and a half in length, is primarily acoustic guitar and female vocals, but all sorts of odd studio trickery catapults it into some strange alternate reality. At times it seems to be going backwards and forwards at the same time, with strange effects and glitches layered over the top. The second song, The Hesitation, continues in the same vein, with even more glitchiness and trickery. I can easily envision drunken monkeys attacking the mixing desk where this recording was taking place. These songs are like caffeinated lullabies, alternately soothing and jarring. The final song, Rainbows, is a fractured romp through childhood innocence ending in the locked-groove repetitiveness of adulthood. Granted, it’s not really a locked groove because it changes gradually over the remainder of the song, but it still lasts for nearly twenty minutes. This last part I could have done without, but overall I found this cd weird and entertaining. One of these days I’ll pick up their full-length.

i'm a big feathers fan. have been looking for the "kurt sings" cdr
for ages, i never even catched a glimpse of it when it was released..
besides discogs.com and some guy's tradelist your blog is the only
online reference for this release through google. my hopes of ever hearing
this album are very slim, but would you perhaps be willing to upload the
songs or send me a copy on cdr if i pay for the disc + postage?
would be really cool to hear from you..
best wishes,
bart
I'll send you a cdr if I can find the disc. I know I still have it somewhere, but I'll have to hunt around for it. Send me your address at Jscharpen@yahoo.com, and I'll let you know when I've found the cd.
Do you have anything to trade - perhaps a cdr of other limited Feathers releases, or anything similar to what I write about on this blog? If not, you can just send me some $$ for postage and the cdr.
cheers,
John
